Just thought that i'd prepare a blog to update you all on my wellbeing while travelling to Africa. I will aim to update this blogger every Friday.
Nervous?
Just a few days before I make that all important flight to Sierra Leone (Salone). Well the last time I went to Africa I got chased by five wild dogs in Ghana and tried to climb a palm tree to escape. Unfortunately, I ended up bouncing off the palm tree, and waiting for dogs to attack my bum. Thankfully, as I opened my eyes (after they were squeezed tight waiting for the mega attack), I looked behind and saw about ten children with large machetes chase the dogs off. In light of this I learnt a very important lesson, kids and knives might not be such a bad thing at all (lol, just kidding).
But on a serious note I am just trying to be completely positive. My mind is made up and I believe that Sierra Leone is going to be great. I feel quite calm about the whole scenario, and glad that I will be reaching the airport at 19:20 and not 23:00 as I initially anticipated. However, I have spent so much time preparing accommodation, visas, vaccinations and insurance, that I havent had much time to sort out my placement. But hopefully the YMCA will be able to direct me in the right direction while in the field.
I believe fear is your biggest enemy and while it is important to be aware of the risks, it equally important not to over magnify them. I think its best just to fly!
